Australia to launch 5-yr temporary visa for Aged Parents

Posted on May 15, 2017

In order to benefit the aged parents of migrants or candidates who claimed Australian Citizenship, Australia has aimed to launch a temporary visa. A promise to introduce aged parent visas was made by the Australian Government during the elections of 2016; when a Labour announcement was made with regards to provide parents of Australian permanent residents a 3yr visitor visa under specific conditions. In this context, Peter Dutton, the Immigration Minister said “The alliance recognises that many Australians, including our growing south Asian and Chinese communities, face particular pressures through the separation of children from parents and grandchildren from grandparents. We want to help families reunite and spend time together, while ensuring that we do so in a way that does not burden Australia’s healthcare system.”

Each year, aged parents of eligible Australia permanent residents and citizens now can apply for any visa among 15,000 visas for a charge of AUD 10,000 per visa. This visa would be valid for a period of 5 years and can be followed by a renewal for lifetime. However, to apply for any of these aged parent visas, applicants must follow certain conditions.

  • Only permanent residents or Australian Citizens can sponsor parents under this visa program
  • People applying for the visa must have private health insurance
  • Children sponsoring parents through this visa must have to sign a bond of $5000 (assurance to support old aged parents)

It is also believed that very soon English language proficiency will also be one of the requirements of an aged parent visa. However, a thorough insight on this is yet to be provided.
