Even after Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s announcement to slow down immigration, the Australian immigration touched a record height with 832,560. This is around 7.1 percent high compared to the migrants in 2017. Taking into account the number of people moving out of Australian, the rate of immigration was still 291,250 which were the highest in the last four and a half years. Most people who are deciding to migrate to Australia are planning to go for Permanent residency and are looking to reside in big cities like Sydney and Melbourne.

Though the Australian Prime Minister promised to put a check on the massive surge of Australian immigration still admits that it is one of the causes behind the economic growth of the country. Though the migration rate hovered around 70,000 in the last decade of the 20th century, Australia has never faced a recession since 1991. In the year 2000, the immigrants applying for permanent residency or long term residence status rose to 100,000. In 2012, the number exceeded 200,000. In August 2018, the population of Australia was 25 million. This happened 22 years before the assumed timeframe that was mentioned in the first inter-generation report in 2002.

Last year’s number of people who migrated to Australia on long term visa of got the permanent residency surpassed the number of migrants to enter the country in the financial year 2016-2017 which was around 539,000 and considered to be a record in the history of Australian immigration. Australian’s population growth rate is 1.6 percent; this is the highest among the developed countries. This is more than double compared to that of the UK or USA. Australian even surpassed the Philippines and is well above the global average of 1.1 percent.

According to the ABS, there was also a considerable increase in the number of people who wanted to migrate to Australia of tourists or visit visa. In 2018 around 1.4 million tourists visited Australia from China, which was an annual 6 percent higher. China even defeated New Zealand is sending a record number of tourists to Australia.
