Australia has confirmed on granting the much awaited sponsored parent’s temporary visa from 17th April 2019. Under this type of visa, the parents and the grandparents of the sponsors can reside with them for 5 years at a stretch.
The legislation for the sponsored parent’s temporary visa subclass 870 was passed in November 2018. According to the Australian Immigration Minister David Coleman, the sponsors will be able to lodge their application to bring their parents to Australia from April 17th, 2019 onwards.
The sponsored parent’s temporary visa will allow the parents and the grandparents to spend more time with their loved ones. According to the Australia immigration department, the sponsors can re-apply for this visa after the expiry of the current one. The parents/grandparents will be eligible to visit Australia on the second tenure of temporary visa after spending a few months outside Australia. This means, now the parents can stay with their children and grandchildren for 10 years.
The Australian Immigration Minister, David Coleman also added that the temporary visa for parents will have great social benefits for many Australian families as more and more families will now get reunited and stay together for the longest time.
However, the sponsored parent’s temporary visa has created disappointment within a portion of the Indian community according to whom this visa is too expensive and is beyond the reach of many Indian families settled in Australia. The new parent’s temporary visa will cost the sponsors $5000 AUD for a three years visa, $10,000 AUD for five years visa and $20,000 AUD for ten years visa, which are 2,51,443.19 INR, 5,02,886.38 INR, and 10,05,772.76 INR respectively. Apart from this, the sponsor has to bear the burden of all healthcare requirements for their parents and grandparents. According to Arvind Duggal, the resident of Adelaide who initiated the ‘Long Stay Visa for Parents’, this is not what they expected. Arvind says the demand for a fairer visa which is affordable to all will still continue.
