Increase of Australia Regional Visas to ease the congestion in Major Cities

Posted on March 22, 2019

Australia Immigration Government is planning to scatter the overcrowded population in Sydney and Melbourne to regional areas. The government is introducing the Regional Visas with a minimum of three years of stay in regional Australia as a must condition for obtaining Australia permanent residence.

As per Australia’s new migration planning level declared on Wednesday, within the 160,000 permanent resident visas 23,000 visas are reserved for new Skilled Regional Visas.

Also, the immigration government is making changes for attracting international students for regional areas. 1,000 Local and Overseas students who take up courses in regional universities are provided with a scholarship amount of $15,000 each. Additionally, they are provided with an additional year to stay for their post-study work visa in Australia.

Alan Tudge, Federal Minister for Australian cities, urban infrastructure and population feels this act of combining new regional visas and more international students will reduce the population in Sydney and Melbourne.

The current regional visas are designed only for two years. But from now, the regional pathways helping in obtaining the Australia permanent residence have increased their regional stay from two to three years.

The Skilled Employers Sponsored Regional Visa, or the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme increased its intake from 6,000 to 9,000 and the State and Territory Sponsored Visa increased its intake from 8,500 to 14,000.

Candidates belonging to these Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme and State and Territory Sponsored Visa will be receiving the high priority processing with access to a major section of eligible occupations for PR.

David Coleman, the Australian Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, states that “For people who migrate to Australia, permanent residency is on top of their list. By linking permanent residency to their stay in regional Australia will help improve compliance.”

Will any changes be affecting with the increase of Regional Visas?

Australia’s annual permanent migration planning level was maintained constant at 190,000 since 2011. But, last year there was a significant decline experienced due to skilled and family stream visas. The intakes through these visas got decreased by 12,000 and 15 percent respectively.

This made the government increase the intake values through the Regional Visa categories. With the addition of regional visas, there can be an effect in a further decrease of Skilled Independent Visas. Also, this can even be a hurdle some for candidates on temporary visas. However, there is no difference experienced to the family visas under the new migration program.
