Posted on July 21, 2017

While Canada is known to be a destination with least visa obligations & restrictions, surprisingly the country has decided to impose a visa obligation on citizens of Antigua and Barbuda. On Monday, June 26 2017, associated officials made an announcement in Ottawa that from the next morning onward any citizen of Antigua & Barbuda travelling to Canada will not be authorized to enter the country only via eTA. The respective citizen must obtain a visa for a valid entry.

A statement by Canadian Government made in this aspect states “After carefully monitoring the integrity of Antigua and Barbuda’s travel documents, the government of Canada has determined that Antigua and Barbuda no longer meets Canada’s criteria for a visa exemption,”. As per the statement, the country, in interest to protect “the integrity of our immigration system and ensuring the safety of Canadians” has taken this initiative. It is also believed that this initiative is linked to the integrity concerns of Antigua & Barbuda Investor Citizenship Program, a program that grants citizenship in return for an investment of US$200,000. Many people of the region have used  this cost-effect method to obtain citizenship and travel visa-free to Canada.

Similarly, in 2014 Canada had impose a visa restriction on travelers from St. Kitts & Nevis, on finding evidences of few people linked to the criminal & terrorist buying St. Kitts passport and entering Canada exempted of immigration screening.

What’s the criterion for this visa?

Citizens of the respective American state can apply for a visa online or at an application center nearest to the Port. The approx. processing time would be 14 days.

Students, visitors & temporary workers of Antigua and Barbuda intending to visit Canada will need to apply for a visa to enter and Canadian citizens intending to visit Antigua and Barbuda must obtain a visa for re-entering Canada. However, citizens with dual citizenship (Canadian & American) only need a valid Canadian passport and Green Card holders need an eTA.
